SpaceDEC - Undertanding and Evaluating Space Efficiency

SpaceDEC (Space Design Efficiency Computing) is a computer application that assesses architectural facilities space planning and design for efficiency and effectiveness attainments, and can be consulted while spaces are being designed, or used by owners and facility managers to analyze, compare and choose or revise space design options.
SpaceDEC was developed by Dr. Benedict Ilozor, Professor & Research Coordinator (Architecture & Construction) in Construction Management at Eastern Michigan University.
SpaceDEC is an AEC software that:
1. diagnoses, based on computation of room geometry and configurations, building space allocation and design efficiency forarchitects and designers as they design or on completion of design;
2. equips owners, facility managers, occupants, buyers, renters, and all users of space to make informed choice among design and building options; and
3. informs immediate or future renovation and refurbishment space efficiency improvements and savings, vis-a-vis what are structurally possible.
SpaceDEC provides a calculation and a rating in form of space area efficiency rating (SAER) or volumetric space efficiency rating (VSER), and graphically shows aspects of the spaces contributing to inefficiency. SpaceDEC Version 1.0 demo is currently available for demonstration as an add-in to Revit.
Presentation will review the general literature and narrative on how we approach space as we design or allocate it. Emphasis will be on how central space efficiency is to energy efficiency, dollar savings, etc.
