The AIA MI COTE committee is sponsoring a tour of 71 Garfield in Detroit on February 23 at 6:30 for AIA COTE. There will be students from Madonna, UDM and Henry Ford community college and we look forward to having AIA members and others who want to learn about sustainable design applied to a renovated, mixed use artists loft in the historic, Sugar Hill district of Detroit.
This unique building has solar pv panels, geothermal wells, recycled materials, healthy finishes, ENERGYSTAR equipment. The owner is selling money back to the grid from their solar array every month... even in cloudy January!
There will also be a presentation by Father Charles Morris founder of the Michigan Interfaith Power and Light organization on the St. Elizabeth story. This is a church that has retrofitted their rectory with a wind turbine and solar panels. During the great blackout of 2003, Father Charles found out about power failures by turning on his television!
There will be refreshments and a tour of this building that was renovated from a burnt out hull, using tax credits, tiff and historic preservation funding. The owner, Zachary and Associates will lead a tour of the building and discuss the unique financing that made the sustainable features of this project affordable.
