AIA Huron Valley is pleased to host a construction tour of a hybrid wood framed house under construction that includes both timber framing and conventional framing system, focusing on the challenges raised by coordinating with both systems for design, construction sequences, and integration of trades.

Location: 5720 Gregory Road in Dexter, MI which is just west of Zeeb (south of North Territorial), approximately 20 minutes from downtown Ann Arbor. 

Parking: Park on the gravel construction drive only

PPE and Other Gear Required: Participants need to wear proper foot wear and warm clothing, and will need to bring hard hats and safety glasses. Note that this is a construction site, without windows or heat.

Continuing Education: This tour will be accredited for 1 LU/HSW continuing education credit. Course No. AIAHVCE0100

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss what timber framing is and how it is a viable and desirable way to build in the 21st century. Compare and contrast the different timber framing approaches employed in 21st century timber framing companies.
  • Discuss design considerations one should consider designing a timber framed building in the 21st century. Also, discuss the limitations of timber framing in the 21st century.
  • Discuss the decision making priorities that had to be considered for the major areas of the house and how those resulting decisions changed the framing tactics and drawing priorities.
  • Discuss how the secondary aspects of those decisions affected the trades to follow and influenced sequencing and schedule. Discuss how the construction sequence and framing changes affects the building department’s inspection schedule and causes confusion regarding what parts of the building are doing what job
